‘Malmö Mission’ to choose Slovenia’s Eurovision 2024 act

While Slovenia had already confirmed its intent to participate at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, no details were set about how a representative would be chosen.

Today, Evrovizija reveled that a new show will be broadcast in January called Malmö Mission. This is a departure from the usual EMA selection show Slovenia has used since 1996.

Malmö Mission will see a maximum of four acts battle it out to represent Slovenia at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in May. To participate, acts must be 16 years of age and reside in Slovenia, along with the usual Eurovision requirements for entries (e.g. song is no longer than 3 minutes, no more than 6 people on stage, etc.).

The submission window is open until midnight CET on 15th November. Interested artists can apply and upload an mp3 directly using an online portal.

An expert committee will select up to four songs based on artistic and aesthetic criteria, including: overall quality, vocal and stage presence, popularity, modernity/innovation and international appeal.

A further update on the technical details of the show is expected on or before 11th December.

In 2023, Slovenian broadcaster RTVSLO internally selected Joker Out to represent the country at Eurovision in Liverpool. This marked Slovenia’s first internal selection since 2013 (excluding 2021).

The band got their country back to the Grand Final for the first time since 2019 with their hit Carpe Diem. The song finished in 21st place with 78 points.
