Chiara Dubey: This song matches with the way I would try to go trough life

The Swiss Entscheidungsshow is taking place this weekend, where a total of six acts are going to compete to represent Switzerland in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. One of them is Chiara Dubey, who is giving her third try in the competition this year, with the ballad titled “Secrets And Lies”. We’ve had the pleasure to talk to Chiara Dubey about her entry, and her preparations, and you can read all about it in this interview:

Hi Chiara! Thank you for taking your time out for talking to us! First of all, how did you feel when you found out that you were one of the finalists this year?

I was very glad and pleased to be appreciated as a singer. The Eurovision is an extremely captivating stage, because of it’s vaste exposure and it’s popularity.

“Secrets and lies” is an emotional and captivating song. Can you tell a little bit about the lyrics and the message in the song, and also what this song means to you on a personal level?

It is a critical look towards people that increasingly need to pretend to be something they are not, as if their real way of being just wasn’t enough, need to hide behind masks to feel appropriate, as a reaction to a competitive society where lies are in the norm. In the song, I am simply turning my back on it, choosing to be myself in the most authentic way. The song wasn’t written by me, it doesn’t have a concrete connection to a precise event of my story, but it certainly does match with the way I would try to go trough life.

How did you decide to enter the Swiss final with this particular song?

It wasn’t my original idea to participate. I have already been twice in the Swiss Eurovision selection and was definitely not planning to try again. However, things went differently this year: SRF asked me, if I was interested in participating to a songwriting camp, which had the aim to create new songs for the Eurovision. I saw it as a great opportunity to meet new people and have an interesting working experience, so I accepted to participate.

Do you have a vision on how you want the performance to look like on the stage?

I do… I guess you will have to watch the show to figure out!

Do you have any favourite among the other contestants?

I really like the Zibbs and their song. It has energy and her performance is very catching!

How would you feel if you went on to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision?

Terribly honoured, proud, strong and certainly a little scared and respectful!

Do you have your own favourite Eurovision entry through the history?

Celine Dion’s “Ne partez pas sans moi”.

What is your favourite Swiss entry?

Again, Celine Dion with “Ne partez pas sans moi” !

Which artists have inspired you to become an artist yourself?

With Celine Dion I started loving singing as little girl. I use to listen to “My Heart Will Go On” in the morning with my father and sing along (and pretend to fly – but I stopped that at a certain age, really!)

My music taste actually became very eclectic. Good music can be found in every genre, as long as the quality and the passion is in it. I personally do listen to a lot of classical music lately, as well as film soundtracks.

What is the difference between now and your previous partisipations?

This time, the song is not of my own production, I am a co-writer but I have mainly the role of the performer. Performing, just like this once, gives me the chance to dive into different atmospheres and worlds, giving me the partial role of an actress, which in fact just forces me to discover other sides of my personality. Also, obviously, I myself am for sure different that 5 years ago!

Thank you very much Chiara, and we wish you the best of luck in Entscheidungsshow!
