The Catalan news portal El Nacional, reports that Andorra is finally going to return to the Eurovision Song Contest!
El Nacional reports that ten years after their retirement due to economic problems and a political disinterest, Andorra’s national broadcaster RTVA is going to return to the Eurovision Song Contest. However, this will only happen once a cost assessment is going to be made. The Andorran government supports the Eurovision return as it will allow local artists to have an international projection and to disseminate the cultural activity of Andorra.
Andorra Turismo, as well as the majority political party in the Andorran Government, Democrates, support the return of Andorra. They stated:
Although Andorra Television is the one who has to decide about the return, the truth is that Eurovision is a great media spectacle, an opportunity to place the nation on the map, but in more detail, what we should find out is the impact it has on participating and properly evaluate it.
Democrates also added:
Return to the competition would be positive, although it would be an important cost for the television station. Although this issue lies in the management of the budget available and the prioritization of projects, it would be good to have this assumed.
The opposition party however, is against Andorra’s return. They classified Eurovision as a “pompous, repetitive, bogus of exhibitionism and disappointment for the music and the performers, because the cast of points has nothing to do with the quality of the songs“.
Mr Xavier Mujal, the General Director of RTVA stated:
Although the Eurovision participation depends on me in the last resort, it must be a country initiative.
Whether Andorra is going to be granted an extended deadline to apply for Eurovision 2020, or whether they would have to sit this one out and apply for next year’s event, is yet to be seen.
Andorra last participated in 2009, when Susanne Georgi took part in Moscow with “La teva decisio (Get A Life)”. Andorra’s best result came in 2007 when Anonymous’ entry “Salvem el mon” finished in 12th place in the semi final.
