Record 130 entries submitted for Latvia’s Supernova selection!

The submission period for entries to Latvia’s “Supernova” selection has now closed and Latvian broadcaster, LTV, has revealed some information surrounding the songs they have received.

LTV received 130 entries, this is the most that has ever been submitted to the broadcaster.

Agnese Strause-Kubliņa, the head of LTV’s Children’s, Youth and Entertainment Program has also revealed that the songs cover the genres of heavy rock, pop, folk and electronic – and among the applicants are artists who have already appeared on the Eurovision stage.

LTV will now appoint a jury who will  go through all 130 entries, and assess the song’s “structure – originality, arrangement, message, compliance with modern market trends, as well as abilities, personalities and past achievements in the industry, as well as the potential for future achievements.” according to LTV.

Once the songs have been assessed, the chosen ones will be put forward for public review in January 2022 in order that the favourites can then be performed on the Supernova 2022 shows which are expected to be broadcast in February 2022.

Of interest in the press release is that there are plural “artists who have represented Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest” – does that mean a band? Like Brainstorm (2000) or Triana Park (2017)? Or solo artists, like Aminata (2015), Justs (2016) or Samanta Tina (2020/2021) ?

Also of note is the comment about the “Supernova 2022 shows”. The last Supernova selection was held in 2020 and consisted of a single final, so we are excited to read that we are likely to have at the very least semi finals as well as a final!

I would love to see Aminata back again, or a new talent like Citi Zēni. Their new song “Limuzīns Uz Krīta” is like a breath of fresh air! Plus, they had me at Sax Guy, lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w0Yr8lLOn4
