Nicoleta Sava: “Bravo” is an exclamation of complete appreciation, approval, and praise!

We kick off our interview series of Moldova’s national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, with the act which is going to open the final this Saturday. Nicoleta Sava has secured herself a spot in the Grand Final with her song “Bravo”, after qualifying from the Live Auditions in 9th place with 40 points. We had the chance to meet Nicola ahead of the big night.

Hello Nicoleta and thank you so much for taking the time to answer a few of our questions –

First of all, what should those readers, who are not familiar with you yet, know about you?

I come from a family with a musical legacy. I did my studies at the “Ciprian Porumbescu” Music School, then moved on to major in Vocals in Folk, Jazz and Pop, at the “Music, Theater and Fine Arts Academy” in Chisinau.

Who are your musical influences and inspirations?

I was exposed to folk music from an early age at home, then studied academic music in school, where I learned the piano. In my teens I became absolutely hooked on Michael Jackson’s music. What he did seemed unique and magical to me. I knew all his moves and songs, and did my best to emulate them by hopping and shrieking around the house!

What has been your best experience with music so far?

The most amazing musical experience that I had must have been in 2018, when I was invited to ESPreParty in Spain to sing “La Esencia del Sur”, with which I had entered the National Pre-selection for Eurovision earlier. The song had gone viral in Spain, and I was welcomed as a true Diva. Everybody sang along with me, and I was astonished to see how many people were there for me!

What was your motivation to enter Moldova’s national selection?

My prime motivation to enter this year’s Eurovision was the song “Bravo” itself, which was written by Spanish co-authors Rafael Artesero and Jose Juan Santana Rodrigues. It inspired me to beat the very tight entry deadline, and overcome all the obstacles that seemed impossible to get over. But we did it!

How did you feel when you knew that you made it to the final of Etapa Nationala?

I was very happy to learn that I was advancing to the National Finals! From that moment on, I knew that this was only the beginning.

Could you explain the meaning of your song “Bravo” – How was it created?

“Bravo” is an exclamation of complete appreciation, approval, and praise!

The song’s message is one of encouragement, of cherishing all the best qualities in a person, like their kindness, generosity, and vigour to get by all of life’s hurdles, achieving the divine goals and spiritual strength that help them keep their faith burning.

The story behind this song is that of Spanish author Rafael Artesero, who wrote it for his good friend that was suffering from cancer. It was his friend’s unwavering faith and spirit, his ability to remain kind and full of light in the face of immense physical pain, that inspired him to present his friend with this song, and it was very well received. Unfortunately, the friend passed away some time later, but we firmly believe that he is looking down with pride and joy on the success of the song that he inspired.

Have you followed Eurovision in the past? Do you consider yourself a fan of it?

Eurovision is a high class competition, where some of the best singers come to be discovered through fabulous visuals and positive attitude.

Do you have some favorite songs?

My favourite songs would be “Euphoria” by Loreen,  “SloMo” by  Chanel, “Tout l’univers” by Gjon’s Tears, “1944” by Jamala , “Wild Dances” by Ruslana, and many others.

Finally, what is a message you would like to spread to our readers from all over the world?

To the readers I would like like to say thank you for your support! Thank you for your wonderful messages of encouragement. Lots of hugs for everyone!

Once again a big thank you from us! We cannot wait to see your performance on the big stage on February 17th. Good luck!
