RÚV admits a mistake in the results of Söngvakeppnin 2024

There is a lot of buzz going on about the results of the Icelandic national selection – Söngvakeppnin, which was held on Saturday evening. Hera Björk was announced as the winner, whilst Bashar Murad ended up as the runner-up. There were calls for an independent investigation on the final results, and Bashar’s team was specifically loud about this. Now the representatives of Söngvakeppninn admitted that there was a mistake in the implementation of SMS voting in the final duel, however – the overall rankings do not change.

The statement coming from RÚV confirms that neither of the two songs competing in the Super Final received the votes they were intended for from the app RÚV Stjörnur. However, they confirm that this did not affect the results of the competition, and that Hera Björk remains the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2024.

The full results of both rounds of voting were also released.

Round 1

In the first round, a mix of jury votes and televoting decided on the top two. Whilst Bashar Murad won both votes, Hera Björk qualified thanks to the jury as they ranked her second. The only band in the Final – Væb finished second in televoting, but last with the juries, thus finished in fourth place overall. The full results are as follows:

Artist Televoting Jury scores Total
Bashar Murad 26359 21304 47663
Hera Björk 15406 16661 32067

Round 2 – The Duel

In the second round, only Hera Björk and Bashar Murad competed, and Hera won by a landslide. The total scores of the voting in the second round were:

Artist Calls SMS Total
Hera Björk 68768 1109 69877
Bashar Murad 49832 1005 50837

The Final Results

When all the results were put together in the end, and due to the massive televoting support she received in the Duel, Hera Björk is the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2024 with “Scared Of Heights”. This is not the first time that the winner of the first round in Söngvakeppnin ends up losing in the Super Final… The last couple of examples of this happening are Systur winning in 2022 (Reykjavíkurdætur won the first round), as well as Ari Ólafsson in 2018 (where Dagur Sigurðsson won the first round).
