Melodifestivalen is always the festival that attracts the highest interest among its songwriters and this year proved to be no exception!
When the deadline for sending in entries passed earlier today, it became known that 2530 songs have been sent in for next year’s contest!
Contest Producer Karin Gunnarsson, who is now responsible since Christer Björkman said his goodbye, states:
It’s great to see how engaging Melodifestivalen is. Over the last ten years, we’ve received an average of 2,500 entries each year. I can’t help but think about the musical breadth that exists in our country and the joy of writing that makes Melodifestivalen replenish the Swedish song treasure every year. Like this year. Still, many of this year’s Mello songs are streamed and several are played regularly on the radio.
For comparison, this is what has been sent in the past few years:
- 2017: 2 478 entries
- 2018: 2 771 entries
- 2019: 2 295 entries
- 2020: 2 545 entries
- 2021: 2 747 entries
Now the massive task begins, for the jury (spearheaded by Karin), to listen to all of these songs.
Karin looks joyfully forward to it, saying:
It’s always exciting to hear what has come in. It will be great to get to know all the entries and start working on a strong field to compete in Melodifestivalen 2022.
The aforementioned jury will pick 14 songs to compete in next year’s contest, the other 14 will be chosen by SVT themselves.
Later this fall we’ll learn who will be competing in Melodifestivalen 2022, which as we reported before, will be hosted by Oscar Zia!
