Israeli Independent Broadcasting Authority shut down!

There have been rumours going around earlier about the IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) being in danger of being shut down.

IBA have been broadcasting for over fifty years but yesterday, after a sudden announcement, the channel went off-air. KAN (Hebrew for: here) is supposed to take its place. There is a problem with that in terms of Eurovision: KAN won’t be offering news broadcasts and that is one of the requirements for a channel to being a full member of the European Broadcasting Union.

This would mean Israel would not be given broadcasting rights for the Eurovision Song Contest (making participation impossible) and sports events like the FIFA World Cup.

For this year however, the Israeli participation is not in danger. Everything can go through as planned. What happens to the Israeli participation in Eurovision remains to be seen. Neither the EBU, nor IBA have commented so far.

Tomorrow, Imri Ziv will be representing Israel in the second semi-final. The show starts at 21:00 CET and Imri will be up last with ‘I Feel Alive’:
