Hooverphonic to represent Belgium at Eurovision 2020!

VRT, the Flemish broadcaster who are responsible for selecting the 2020 Belgian Eurovision act have just announced the participating artists.

One of the most successful Belgian bands of the last 25 years, its Hooverphonic!

Made up of Alex Callier, Raymond Geerts and Luka Cruysberghs the three piece were originally formed in October 1995, and chose the band name ‘The Hoover’.  They quickly changed this however due to an obvious copyright issues!

Their chart history in their native Belgium is phenomenal and they can boast the following stats:

SINGLES

44 releases with 31 Top 75 hits and 4 Top 5 places

ALBUMS

10 studio albums with 9 top 10’s and 3 number 1’s

Their first taste of success on the Belgian charts was in 1999 with the luscious trip-hop string laden song ‘Eden’ which reached number 12.

Their most streamed single however and by a large margin is ‘Mad About You’, a European wide hit and often considered the band’s most memorable song.  It charted in Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, the UK and Australia:

In a weird Eurovision twist, one of their biggest charting singles ‘Badaboum’ features the vocals of none other than Èmelie Satt, one half of France’s 2018 act ‘Madame Monsieur’!

Originally formed as a trip hop act, they later in their career branched out into more electronica and indie sounds.

The band has had many changes in personnel over the years, particularly in the lead singer position.  The current lead singer is Luka Cruysberghs who joined the band in 2018.

VRT will be hoping to improve on Belgium’s 2019 showing, where Wallonia’s Eliot failed to get out of the first semi final with ‘Wake Up’.  The Flemish broadcaster will also be looking for a better showing than its 2018 act Sennek who also failed to make the Grand Final with her entry ‘Matter Of Time’:
