BBC gives us an early look at the Eurovision 2023 postcards

The creative concept and plans for Eurovision 2023’s postcards were just revealed by the BBC.  These are the short films that are shown before each performance, while crews in the arena work quickly to prepare the stage for each live performance.

The BBC has set a record for the most locations featured in one set of Eurovision postcards, with an incredible 111 different locations featured for 2023!

Using drone technology again this year in addition to 360-degree cameras, we will be introduced not only to the 37 artists competing at this year’s Eurovision, but also to colorful and important locations across the UK, Ukraine, and the other 35 competing countries.

BBC’s lead commissioner for Eurovision 2023, Rachel Ashdown, had this to say about the postcards:

“As well as the UK, Ukraine and participating countries being United by Music, viewers will be surprised to see what else unites us too. […] They are the perfect way to introduce each act to the combined 160 million people watching across the globe, and I can’t wait for audiences to see this year’s offering when they air in the Semi Finals and Grand Final.”

Windfall Films based in the UK worked with Ukrainian film production company 23/32 Films. They had the task of organizing the shoots and obtaining the aerial filming permits for the portions of each postcard filmed in Ukraine.

Another Ukrainian touch to this year’s postcards will be the featured music. Ukrainian musician and composer Dmytro Shurov created the postcards music from Kyiv.

Sarah Cherniavskyi, executive producer for 23/32 Films in Ukraine also commented:

“We are pleased to participate in this project and to show that shooting of every difficulty level is still possible in Ukraine. This year’s Eurovision, despite not happening in Ukraine due to Russian aggression, will have our country in its heart.”
