Eurofans will no doubt be spoilt by the number of returners, to Sanremo, Eurovision and other national finals, will be featured on the show throughout the week. Among the covers night performances are former Italian ESC entries Occidentali’s Karma, which will be performed by Fiorella Mannoia in a duet with Gabbani, who she came second to at the festival in 2017, and Non mi avete fatto niente, which Maninni will perform with Ermal Meta. Originally, this song won him Sanremo 2018 in duet with Fabrizio Moro, who will perform a medley of his own songs alongside Il Tre at the Ariston in 2024.

Among the competitors in the main competition are four former Italian Eurovision representatives: Emma Marrone (La mia città, 2014), Il Volo (Grande amore, 2015), Mahmood (Soldi, 2019, and Brividi, 2022, with Blanco) and Diodato (Fai rumore, 2020). However, following the release of the press reviews on 15th January, the momentum has been firmly behind Annalisa, whose sixth participation at Sanremo follows a hugely successful year for her on the Italian music scene, with the release of her No.1 album E poi siamo finiti nel vortice and No.1 summer hit Mon amour. She starts as the favourite with her song Sinceramente (Sincerely), along with veteran songstress Loredana Bertè, who topped the rankings at the press reviews with Pazza (Crazy).

This year, all acts will perform their songs on Night 1, next Tuesday on Rai 1, starting at 8:40pm CET. The next two nights will feature half of the competing acts, with Night 4 designated for everyone performing covers. On Night 5, a combination of all the votes from the week gone by will determine which 5 acts will go through to the Superfinal, with the winner getting first refusal to compete for Italy in Malmö at Eurovision 2024. This offer has been accepted by all but one winner since this format was introduced in 2013, and it’s highly likely this year’s winner will also oblige.

Italy’s recent run at Eurovision has been spectacular. Since returning in 2011, they’ve finished in the Top 10 on all but two occasions, the Top 3 on four occasions, and won once, in 2021, with Måneskin and Zitti e buoni. 2023 saw Marco Mengoni take to the stage for his home country for the second time in Liverpool, with Due vite. He came fourth with 350 points.
