Romania to compete in Malmö, with an entry selected via national final?

A total of 37 confirmed their participation in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, with Romania still being under a big question mark. The EBU granted an extension to Romania’s TVR to confirm their participation until the 22nd of January, and an official announcement to the final decision if Romania will be present in Malmö or not is yet to be confirmed. However, sudden changes on TVR’s Eurovision page indicate that we may indeed see a Romanian entry in Malmö, and that this entry will be selected via Romania’s traditional national selection “Selectia Nationala”.

Over the last day, TVR’s Eurovision page has been updated – not just with the usual Eurovision news. The Romanian language pages now include sections about the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, Selectia Nationala, and Applications rules as they have all been re-opened and added to the menus, whilst these pages are all marked with “coming soon” types of signs. The English language pages are left with two sections only – News and Contact. Would this be a good enough indication that Romania will indeed be the 38th country in Malmö, and that their entry will once again be chosen by (a last-minute) Selectia Nationala? We sure hope so, but it remains to be seen. The official confirmation should come in no more than 10 days.

Theodor Andrei won last year’s edition of Selectia Nationala in a very tight race, and went on to represent Romania in Eurovision in Liverpool. He scored no points in his semi final, marking this as Romania’s worst rated entry in the history of the Contest. Romania’s best result is third place from 2005 and 2010, when Luminita Anghel & Sistem, and Paula Seling & Ovi respectively, represented their country.
