Tali: “I go through tough moments everyday. But it is because of those moments that I’m here today, because I got up and kept fighting!”

This weekend, the hotly-anticipated selection for Luxembourg’s first representative since their return to the Eurovision Song Contest will take place and we will learn which of the eight competing artists will get the ticket to Malmö, Sweden. This will be the first year that Luxembourg has appeared at the contest since 1993, so all eyes are on whether Luxembourg will make a successful return to the contest.

Amongst those artists competing to represent their home nation of Luxembourg is young singer Tali. The Luxembourg-born, New York City-living singer has been surrounding herself with music for the past few years through gigs, studies, and releasing music. And now her latest release “Fighter” will be her entry for the Luxembourg Song Contest final this weekend. Editor David had a chance to catch up with her ahead of the rehearsals for the live show and found out all about how she is feeling, what the song means to her and what root vegetable she can’t stand being mashed!

Check out the interview with the band below:

D: Firstly, a huge welcome to the Luxembourg Song Contest! It’s so good to see Luxembourg back at the contest after 31 years. How did you react when you found out that you were chosen to compete at the national selection?
T: I was in New York City at the Herald Square and RTL [the Luxembourg broadcaster] called me and told me via FaceTime. I was so excited to find out, truly.

D: Born in Luxembourg but now based out of New York City. How are you finding living in the Big Apple? Have you grown up watching Eurovision at all?  If so, do you have any favourite songs or artists from the shows?
T: I never thought I’d be back here in the finals for the Eurovision. It’s such an honor. Eurovision means a lot to me because of my grandpa. He was a big fan of the program and would always send me updates via email of what was going on every year. It was through him that I got into the show. We were really close before he passed away when I was 15 in a car accident. So it really means a lot I made it this far. I definitely have a favorite artist in the Eurovision – I’m a big fan of Cornelia Jakobs. Her emotion and voice are just incredible.

D: We have to talk about your song “Fighter”. It’s a beautiful blend of French and English languages. Tell us what this song means to you and why you are excited to perform it.
T: Thank you!! The song means a lot to me. It talks about persevering and finding strength even in the toughest moments in life. As an artist, I go through tough moments everyday. But it is because of those moments that I’m here today, because I got up and kept fighting/kept going.

D: How are rehearsals going? Are you able to share with us any plans you have for the stage show of “Fighter”?
T: They’re incredible. It is a dream. There are going to be dancers for my number and they are just phenomenal and a pleasure to work with. It is such an empowering performance, I am so excited for the performance!!

D: This isn’t your first adventure in the world of music – having released your first original music aged 16. How has that journey into the music industry been for you? What have been the biggest lessons you’ve learned?

T: I’ve had many ups and downs – but that’s the beauty of it all. After that single called “Temporary” I released my EP with Francis of delirium called “lose you” and then a couple more singles after. In the mean time, I studied music and theatre in NYC for 4 years and gigged in the evenings with my original music in places like Mercury Lounge and Bowery Electric!

D: You describe your artistry as blending together pop, indie, and R&B. With that in mind, who are your biggest musical influences? If you could duet with one performing artist, alive or dead, who would you choose and what song would you like to sing?
T: Lizzy McAlpine hands down, I love her music! There are so many artists I admire and would love to work with, some include; Lady Gaga, Sara Bareilles, Laufey.

D: Our readers absolutely love to find out more about the competing musicians, so tell us a fun or crazy fact about you.
T: I hate mashed potatoes…

D: Do you have any other music projects or personal projects coming up? Let us know what is next for you after the Luxembourg Song Contest.

T: Yes! I have an album with a band called Blue Stripes that’s kind of Stevie Wonder vibes – very jazz funk. That’ll be out probably this summer.

D: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer the questions above. Finally, do you have a message for our readers and your fans?

T: Just Thank you!!! Thanks for all your support, really.  Also, if you have a passion GO DO IT. Life is too short not to do what you love to do.

Make sure to check out Tali’s performance of “Fighter” in the Luxembourg Song Contest on Saturday 27th January 2024 at 20.00 CET!
