Romania will not compete in Eurovision 2024

The Romanian national broadcaster TVR just confirmed that Romania will officially not compete in Eurovision Song Contest 2024, which means that as of today, 37 countries will be travelling to Malmö.

The Board of Directors at today’s meeting did not approve the Eurovision project, due to financial reasons, as the TV would not be able to support their act’s performance at a satisfactory level. The decision was made in a vote, where 5 people voted for a withdrawal, 4 people voted for competing, whilst the remaining 4 did not vote.

Instead of competing in Eurovision, TVR will allocate their resources to other priority productions and projects, including the transmission of the Olympic Games in Paris, the continuation of their technological process – the automation of the broadcast TVRs channels, investments in the news production system, the continuation of investments in the new headquarters of TVR Craiova and other long-delayed modernization projects. TVR did not however rule out a comeback in the years to come.

Theodor Andrei won last year’s edition of Selectia Nationala, and went on to represent Romania in Liverpool with his song “D.G.T. (Off And On)”. Unfortunately, he finished in last place in the semi final with no points, making that Romania’s worst ever result in Eurovision history.
