YONNA: ‘The song might be giving sad vibes, but I really feel that there’s some hope in letting go as well’

Eesti Laul 2024 is just around the corner – and we’ve been chatting to some of the 20 artists hoping to represent Estonia in Malmo.

Having previously entered the contest in 2019, you might remember Johanna Eendra (aka YONNA) for her touching song ‘Miks sa teed nii’. Her entry for 2024, ‘I Don’t Know About You’ shares a similar vibe – heartfelt, soft and slow.

So how did the song come about? What were YONNA’s key inspirations for the track? Read on below to find out everything you need to know.

S: Tell us about your song – what inspired you to write it?

Y: I wrote this song about the situation where you lose contact with somebody who once meant a lot to you. Even though you don’t talk anymore, the love and sympathy is still there. It is written about my own experiences as I find it easiest to write about my own life.

The song might be giving sad vibes, but I myself really feel some hope in letting go as well. I am a person who usually does not leave things unsaid, so my heart is light and I don’t feel any regrets about these people and situations.

S: You were an Eesti Laul semi-finalist in 2019 with your song ‘Miks sa teed nii?’. What was that experience like?

Y: When I think back to Eesti Laul 2019 and ‘Miks sa teed nii’ I feel really positive. I learned so much. I remember how cool it was to sing on stage and on live television for the first time, also a bit scary. It is definitely a competition that you want to come back to again and again.

S: What made you decide to enter Eesti Laul again this year?

Y: We finished ‘I Don’t Know About You’ this summer. It is a really special song for me and I love it so much. I really felt that I should enter Eesti Laul with this song; I could see myself singing it on the stage and it just felt right.

S: We can see from your instagram that you like to dance! Can we expect to see any choreography in your performance?

Y: I do love dancing and I have been dancing pretty much my whole life. Though I think for this song there probably will not be any choreography, this song might work better on stage without.

S: Finally, do you have any favourite Eesti Laul songs?

Y: I definitely watch Eesti Laul every year and always find favorites. These two came to mind right now: ‘Goodbye to Yesterday’ by Stig and Elina, and ‘Spirit Animal’ by Kerli.

Thank you YONNA – and best of luck in the upcoming semi final! You can listen to her entry, ‘I Don’t Know About You’ below.
