Maltese singer Joe Cutajar passed away at the age of 83

Maltese singer and their second representative at Eurovision Song Contest 1972, Joe Cutajar passed away at the age of 83. Some famous Maltese singers and composers including Mark Spiteri Lucas shared that Malta had lost a musical legend

The news about Joe’s death was shared by his brother Frankie on Facebook. Cutajar’s singing career spanned for decades and he sang in a number of countries and had worked as a cabaret artist in London’s West End in the 60s. Joe was also among the soloists in the rock opera Ġensna. Cutajar was married to Hilda, and the couple had three children. In 1972 Cutajar had represented Malta at the Eurovision contest together with Helen Micallef with the song “L-Imħabba”. They scored 48 points and Malta came last for the second year in a row.

Joe won the Maltese national selection for Eurovision 1972 with 28 points while Helen ended on third place with the song “Għasfur taċ-ċomb”. The broadcaster decided to change the song to a duet so she joined Joe at the contest. The song was performed ninth in the running order, conducted by the composer Charles Camilleri. Joe Cutajar and Helen Micallef got reunited to perform “L-imħabba” on the 50th anniversary of their participation at MESC 2022.
