Romanian participation in Malmö hinges on state budget

Romania’s 24th Eurovision participation is up in the air at this point. Since the official list of participating countries was announced earlier this week, a lot of speculation has been focused on Romania, as the EBU noted that the country could return to bump the total to 38 countries.

Today, news from Pagina de media in Romania indicate that the EBU has given Romanian broadcaster TVR an extension to pay the Eurovision participation fee. TVR is currently not able to commit to Eurovision, until the Romanian government approves its budget for 2024 — and with an election looming in Romania, all bets are off as to the outcome.

Pagina de media received a statement from the broadcaster which reads:

“As communicated, regarding Romania’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2024, TVR has not made a final decision. At this moment, we are in contact with the organizers (European Broadcasting Union – EBU) and all options remain open. The EBU granted Romanian Television a delay to express its option after the adoption of the state budget for 2024.”

At time of publishing, the EBU has not publicly set a deadline for Romania’s participation.

Romania last participated at Eurovision in Liverpool where Theodor Andrei got last place in a tough Semi Final with his self-penned song D.G.T. (Off and On), finishing with 0 points.
