Our editor Matt spoke to Kyrie Mendél who’ll be competing in the final of this year’s Selecția Națională
Hi Kyrie. Congratulations on making it to the final!
When did you first get into music?
I was 11 when my parents gifted me a small digital piano for Christmas. I “invented” my first song that night.
How were you chosen for Selecția Națională ?
I simply sent a song into the competition, as everyone did. I didn’t know anyone involved in this project and I had no expectations whatsoever.
What’s your song about?
My song is about a lost love. A love that can never be brought back, a love that has left an immense, irreplaceable void.
What inspires your music?
I take personal events that happened in my life, but not working solely on that. It’s just the starting point.
Aside from that, of course, I’m inspired by different artists, such as Kurt Elling, Tom Misch, Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday, Moonchild, Bill Withers etc.
How will you stage the song?
Don’t know yet, we’re discussing that in the next days. 🙂
Are you fan of Eurovision? When did you first start watching it?
Yes I am, I used to watch it with my family when I was young and I still do.
What’s your favourite Eurovision song?
Portugal – Salvador Sobral
What’s been your favourite Romanian song?
I have 2 🙂 Malina Olinescu – Eu cred / The Humans – Goodbye
Great choices! Is there anything about you that people may not know?
I’m quarter Hungarian, but I don’t speak the language 🙂
What’s your favourite non Eurovision song?
I have way too many favourite songs:))
