Following the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the EBU and AVROTROS/NOS/NPO- production Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, several member broadcasters have also started their own initiative.
And here is SVT’s idea!
SVT will be organising a Eurovision Week!
The week starts exactly one week before the would-have-been final: on the 9th of May.
On that day we see the comeback of the famous Swedish introduction- and rating Eurovision show Inför ESC (English: Before ESC)!
This year, the songs will be introduced by one of this year’s Melodifestivalen hosts, David Sundin, who has none other than Christer Björkman as his sidekick!
All 41 entries will be introduced to the public and it is also from that moment the Swedish viewers can vote for their favourite entries in the Mello-app!
The next stage will take place on Thursday the 14th of May with: Sveriges 12:a (English: Sweden’s 12)!
In this show, created by Christer Björkman and famous script writer Edward af Sillén, we’ll find out which 25 entries the Swedish public want to see in the final and during that very show, the voting lines open again so a winner can be found! Who would the Swedish people have wanted to see as the Eurovision 2020 winner?
In the meantime there will be throwbacks to dear Eurovision moments, will we look back on the two most recent Swedish hostings (Malmö 2013 and Stockholm 2016) and The Mamas will visit the studio and sing ‘Move’!
About these unique shows, Christer Björkman says:
I’m glad that this year, the TV-viewers can vote for their favourites as well and I hope it can unite the Swedish people in a time where nothing is what it used to be. So now we’re gonna do this together! Watch it, have an opinion and vote!
And finally, on the 16th of May, the day the Eurovision final would’ve taken place, SVT are also on board in showing Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light.
Hosted by Chantal Janzen, Jan Smit and Edsilia Rombley, this will be a 2-hour long show where the Eurovision 2020 artists will be honoured, we’ll see fragments of their Eurovision 2020 songs and they’ll be singing Eurovision favourites.
You can find more information on this show over here.
This year, The Mamas would’ve competed for Sweden with ‘Move’:
