Good evening Europe! It’s time for Moldova to begin their song selection for this year’s Eurovision! Who will go to Kyiv?
And we begin! We start off with some dancing – the dancers are in futuristic outfits, and there’s lots of red and silver.
We see the studio, and it looks quite small and compact, not many people there!
Our presenters take the stage and describe the events of the evening, I think. I don’t speak Romanian, only Italian and Spanish and I can get words here and there.
I think it’s 50/50 as usual. We get the telephone numbers for the public to vote – it costs them 10 Lei, which is about 0.47 Euro.
We are in the Camera Verde with Felicia Dunaf, who has participated in the Moldovan selection a few times.
We are now introduced to the jury members.
Song 1 – Vozniuc feat. Vio Grecu – Don’t Lie
First up is a male duo consisting of a singer and guitarist. It’s quite a rocky mid-tempo number, which is performed well but it’s a bit shouty for my tastes. Still I’ve heard worse, but I hope there’s better to come!
Song 2 – Emilia Russu – If Only You
A rather traditional ballad here, with lots of minor keys. Vocally, Emilia is a little sharp at times but she’s not too bad. The melody for this song isn’t great though, and it feels more like a vocal exercise. There’s stronger songs already chosen for Kyiv so I think picking this would be a mistake. Still I don’t mind it.
Song 3 – Sandy C – A Beautiful World
This is kinda similar to the song before, but slightly better, I’d say. It sounds like something from Malta, or a bit like What If from Russia a few years ago. Sandy is slightly off at times but overall, this isn’t too bad, but again, not sure this is the right choice for Kyiv.
Song 4 – Valeria Paşa – Freedom
I think Valeria has been in the Moldovan selection before. This is quite sweet actually, with quite nice lyrics, and the chorus has some country tinges too. Valeria sings well and she looks pretty. For me, this is the best so far, and should easily qualify tonight.
Song 5 – Sergiu Pungă – Ne-a Fost Iubirea Un Joc (Love Was a Game)
Ok Sergiu as meant to be joined by Valentina Nejel but she is nowhere to be seen! This is quite old school in style, and I think it’s easy to tell this was meant as a duet. It’s quite melodic but it is definitely missing something, but after a slightly shaky start, Sergiu’s vocals are good but it’s just a bit too dated to make an impact.
After an ad break we are back with the presenters and Felicia in the green room. She interviews the contestants and there’s even a guy from Spain and also from the UK! I’m not quite sure why. Are they the songwriters?
Song 6 – Ethno Republic & Surorile Osoianu – Discover Moldova
Well this one is interesting! I am not sure how to describe it It starts off quite ethnic and then after some fiddling, it bursts into something reminiscent of the Russian grannies, and there’s drums, it sounds about 87 songs in one and I really don’t know what to make of it! But sending this would stand out a county mile for sure!
08/10 (for the WTF factor)
Song 7 – Marks & Stefanet – Join Us in the Rain
So this is written by Ralph Siegel! Yes he is still going. And you can tell. The woman has a really strong voice but the guy’s is a bit poor and you can barely hear him. It’s very old fashioned, and I got a bit bored half way though, but Moldova should bring the girl back another year, because she is so much better than this song.
Song 8 – Aurel Chirtoacă – Dor de mamă (I Miss Mother)
Songs about mothers don’t always have the best success at Eurovision. This is quite a depressing ballad about the death of his mother and there’s even a picture of her wearing a headscarf projected behind him. There’s some Balkan touches to it, and it might have an audience tonight.
Song 9 – Big Flash Sound – Logic
The female singer is flanked by two drummers and two guitarists, it has a rocky vibe and starts off quite promising but the chorus is a disappointment. Vocally, it’s average, but the song is just too forgettable to make any sort of impact at all.
Song 10 – SunStroke Project – Hey Mamma
Moldova’s Eurovision entrants (minus Olia) are back with another attempt to represent their country, with yet another song about a mother Epic Sax Guy is there! This is catchy, and performed well but it’s just very dated. I think it’s the most likely winner from those we have heard tonight, but I’m not sure this is a qualifier, just how many times do they sing Mamma? It gets a bit annoying. But they’ve had worse entries.
Felicia is back in the green room chatting to the last 5 performers. Just 4 left to go!
Song 11 – Diana Brescan – Breath
Another song about the state of the world now. Diana’s wearing a very plain outfit, she looks a bag lady or something. She takes off her coat halfway through the song. I quite like the chorus but the verses are poor and Diana has trouble singing them. It’s a bit here nor there this one.
Song 12 – Nadia Moșneagu – Never Give Up On Us
The song is a little bit operatic and there is quite a bit of interpretative dance on stage joining Nadia, which is a bit distracting. Vocally, Nadia is good, but she is definitely better than the song, which isn’t terrible, and one of the better ones tonight, but still nothing amazing.
Song 13 – Samir Loghin – Glow
The staging for this one is quire interesting with two dancers in pyramid hats with their faces covered by black fabric. Samir is dressed in white and he is pretty weak vocally. This just kinda meanders its way along without really reaching its destination and has an oriental theme, though. I’d say it’s a classic case of style over substance.
Song 14 – The ONE – Dance
Last up tonight is this funky little number which is vocally sound but I find the singers stage antics a bit much, I like the verses but the chorus is again, a little disappointing which is a recurring theme this evening. But I would say that this is a qualifier.
So that’s all the songs done. Overall, quite a disappointing selection really, and apart from Discover Moldova and Sunstroke Project, I can’t really remember anything and I think the race will be between these two. I’d go for Discover Moldova as at least it;s different; but I guess that Sunstroke Project would be the safer choice.
This show is scheduled to be on for another hour! How on earth are they going to fill it? 😀
We now get a recap of the songs with the relevant voting numbers,
Back with the presenters, but my stream is stopping and starting so badly I can barely keep up with what is happening!
Interval act time with DoReDos, who are perennial entrants in this, but not this year. They participated on The Voice Romania or one of those reality type shows last year. They didn’t win.
Stela Botan now, and she’s also been in the NF. This is a nice piano ballad, and it’s probably better than anything on offer tonight!
Next up is Cezara. It seems we are getting all of Moldova’s top musical acts as interval acts tonight!
Advert break, we still have 35 mins to go! Now back to the presenters who talk about something else.
ooooh now we get the juror votes! That was unexpected!
The first 12 goes to Diana Brescan. The next 12 goes to Sunstroke Project.
The third 12 also goers to Sunstroke Project! They are in the lead followed by Diana Brescan and Ethni Republic!
Ethno Republic get the 4th 12, and it seems we have a clear top 3.
The next 12 goes to Vozniuc! What a surprise.
The next 12 goes to Ethno Republic, and they take the lead!!!
Sunstroke get the next 12 and go 2 points in the lead over Ethno Republic and it is a definite 2 horse race now.
So the top 4 have already qualified for the final – Sunstroke Project, Ethno Republic, Diana Brescan and Aurel Chirtoaca. The remaining 10 songs are now battling it out for the last 4 spots in the final.
Now the televote opens and we can see how the vote is going – Marks & Stefanet are MILES ahead of everyone else! Samir Loghin is in second place and the top 4 are rounded up by Valeria Pasa and Vozniuc feat. Vio Grecu but Sandy C is close behind!
Vozniuc and Sandy are truly fighting it out for that last spot in the final.
Vozniuc is now pretty clear of Sandy and is challenging Valeria for third place!
So they are covering the voting numbers with the actual voting results! Hah!
