Romania’s 2024 participation to be determined on 25th January

Romanian news outlet Fanatik has discovered that Romania will decide on its participation at Eurovision 2024 next week, on Thursday, 25th January.

A hot topic of debate in the Eurovision fandom since December has been about Romania’s potential participation at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Back then, the EBU revealed that 37 countries would compete in Malmö this May, but it came with an asterisk.

The EBU advised at that time that Romania was still in negotiations about a possible return to the Contest in 2024, something Romanian fans had been worried about even before the official announcement came.

While some sources had 22nd January as the absolute deadline for Romania to make its final decision regarding participation, Fanatik is reporting that it will now come on 25th January during a board meeting of Romanian broadcaster TVR.

Dan Turturică, director general for TVR, had this to say about Romania’s Eurovision 2024 hopes:

“We will have a board meeting on January 25. We have a delay from the EBU to give a final answer by the end of this month. We will have the board meeting. There, we will have a vote. This is not a decision for me to make alone. It’s a decision that has to be put to a vote because it involves some big costs. It is a decision that will be taken by open vote by all 13 members of the Board of Directors. On the 25th, the decision will be put to the vote and after that we will announce [the results].”

It is speculated that Romania’s Eurovision participation fee is around 180 thousand euros, and then comes the added cost of the staging, sending and hosting the delegation in Sweden, and other miscellaneous costs which could be a minimum of tens of thousands of more euros.

Romania last participated at Eurovision in Liverpool where Theodor Andrei got last place in a tough Semi Final with his self-penned song D.G.T. (Off and On), finishing with 0 points.
